SEND
Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) at Beaufort Primary School
Pupils with SEND are a deeply important part of our school community. We are committed to ensuring they experience the same high expectations, joy in learning and sense of belonging as all other pupils. In our school jigsaw, every child is an essential piece: valued, visible and connected within the shared picture of school life.
Our inclusive practice is underpinned by our BRAVE values, which guide daily life in school and reflect our commitment to empowering every child, whatever their starting point. We follow a structured and graduated approach to ensure early identfication of need, working closely with families and drawing on the Derby City Local Offer. For the majority of pupils, needs are met through high quality, adaptive teaching within the classroom, supported by targeted interventions and close collaboration between teachers, the SENDCO/ SLT and the Trust Director of SEND.
Definition of Special Educational Needs and Disability
The Special Education Needs and Disability Code of Practice (2015) states that a child or young person (CYP) has a special educational need or disability if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for them. A child of compulsory school age or a young person has a learning difficulty or disability if they have:
- a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age, or
- a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools.
The Local Offer
Derby City Council’s SEND Local Offer is an online one stop shop for parents/carers and young people to find out about all the services and support on offer to children and young people from birth to 25 years who have Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) in the city. Derby City Council, along with all other local authorities, are required to publish information about services they expect to be available in their area. Derby City’s Local Offer is available here: www.derby.gov.uk/sendlocaloffer.
Special Educational Needs and Disability Information Report
Schools utilise the Local Authority offer to meet the needs of pupils with SEND as determined by the school’s policy and provision. Schools refer to this as the Special Educational Needs and Disability Information Report.
