Biographies
Chris Groom
Chair of Governors and Regional Director for several schools across the Midlands and Wales. Chris has worked in education in both Secondary and SEND settings for over twenty years, ten of which have been at a senior level including the roles of Headteacher and Head of Service. During this time, he has taken great pleasure in empowering staff, nurturing capacity at all levels. Chris believes that the decisions we make should always have a positive impact on the children. Currently all of the schools Chris oversees have achieved Good and Outstanding judgments in recent Ofsted inspections.
Mel Elliott
Mel has over 25 years of strategic corporate leadership experience in private sector banking and public sector. Working full time whilst completing an MBA in Leadership and Management, she manages a wide range of programmes and projects, both strategically and operationally bringing governance, financial resilience, and strategic risk management skills with her.
Mel also has experience in SEND, Voice of the Child, Parent Carers Forums, Commercialism, Mentoring and Coaching, Change Management. A strong advocate for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion sitting on Derby City Council’s EDI Board and promoting the benefits of diversity, as well as embracing the code of conduct as a chartered member of CMI (Chartered Managers Institute).
Mel has a passion for developing people to reach their full potential, previously chairing the Derby College advisory board for business skills, ensuring the children get the best opportunity to learn and thrive with a good education.
Jane Green (Chair)
Jane has been an Executive Headteacher in a number of schools in Derby City for over 20 years. She achieved National Leader of Education status during this period and has also worked as an Ofsted Inspector. Her current role is Head of Inclusion within The Harmony Trust who have 9 academies in Derby City. She currently chairs the Primary Behaviour Strategic Group for Derby L.A.
Anna Upton
Anna is the Deputy Trust Leader of the Embark Federation since November 2020. She is dedicated to improving the life of each individual child, nurturing their strengths, personalities and interests to bring out the best in them.
Anna is responsible for the implementation of the digital strategy, data, safeguarding, risk and quality assurance strategies across the trust. She plays an integral role within the Trust leading, both strategically and operationally, the support, advice and guidance that enable the academies to succeed and ensures the consistent delivery of Embarks Vision & Core Beliefs.
Her first leadership role was secured in Nottingham City and from here she moved to teach at Chaucer Junior School in Ilkeston. She then moved to work as an Advanced Skills Teacher where she supported schools and teachers across Derbyshire. She was the headteacher at Chaucer Junior School for 10 years. Anna has also worked in various roles as an Associate School Improvement Adviser for Derbyshire County Council supporting schools and their leaders in a wide variety of school improvement activities. She feels privileged to be able to use her role within Embark to impact on so many children’s lives.
Phil Storer
Phil has held several senior roles in both large plc’s and private businesses, both in UK and in mainland Europe.
A qualified finance professional, Phil developed into a generalist. He spent 16 years with Exel (now DHL) where he worked across a number of supply chains with both retailers and producers as well as delivering large M&A and development projects. Latterly, Phil has operated large-scale pan European circular economy (reuse) system models both in the FMCG/Retail and polymer sectors.
Now retired from full-time employment. Phil is using his experience and knowledge to give something back by helping others.
