Music
What are we trying to achieve?
At Beaufort, we want every child to develop a secure understanding of music through listening, singing, playing, improvising, performing and composing across a wide range of styles, traditions and genres. Our aim is to inspire a lifelong love of music, provide equal opportunities for all pupils, and ensure they gain the knowledge and skills to appreciate how music has evolved through history.
How do we deliver our vision?
We teach regualr music lessons from EYFS to Year 6 using the Kapow scheme as a base, which ensures
progression in line with the National Curriculum. Lessons are inclusive, engaging and sequenced to help children review, remember and apply key knowledge and skills.
Beyond the classroom, pupils enjoy a wide range of musical opportunities, including:
-
KS2 instrumental lessons taught by professional musicians, with the chance to achieve accredited awards.
-
Weekly singing assemblies from Year 1 to Year 6, with opportunities to perform solo, in groups, and in school events such as Harvest Festivals, Christmas Nativities, Christmas Carol Singing Event, Year 6 End of Year Showcase, Brass Music Concerts, and Beaufort’s Got Talent.
-
An annual Music Week, where pupils work with visiting musicians, explore new instruments, collaborate with other local schools in our Trust, and showcase their talents in a whole-school production.
What difference does this make?
By the time they leave Beaufort, children have developed the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy music as listeners, performers and composers. They understand music’s cultural and historical significance, can analyse and appreciate its different elements, and carry forward a lifelong love of music.

DerbyshIre Music Hub
We also work in partnership with the Derbyshire Music Education Hub, who provide specialist classroom instrumental teaching. In Key Stage 2, pupils have the opportunity to learn brass instruments with experienced music teachers. Many children in Years 5 and 6 choose to continue their lessons beyond the classroom and are currently working towards accredited music certificates.
The Derbyshire Music Hub also uses our school every Saturday morning to run a wide range of music sessions. The school becomes a real hive of activity, and families are always welcome to pop along and see the fantastic opportunities on offer.
